The Clear Sky Rule

This website, is all about not having viruses, so I thought I would make a post or two about how to, as the name says Live Your Life Free of Viruses.

So here’s the first one, I think I'll call it the clear sky rule. As corny as it may be, I think that by keeping your computer clean and clear of everything you don't want, or need, you can actually improve your quality of life…
I know, I know, it sounds a tad far. I mean most people dont LIVE on their computers right? They do other stuff, so how in the world will this help improve their quality of life?
Basically it all comes down to efficiency, learning what you can do to squeeze every minute of time you spend staring at this screen for as much productivity that you can, and there are lots of ways to do this. I think two of the biggest are window management and keyboard shortcuts, (they personally save me from at least one headache a day) but nothing really compares to the power of just having a clean and well organized environment to work in.
The Windows operating system its self, millions of people use it, and it's no doubt the most widely used OS in the world, yet many people dont know how to use it to its full potential. Unlike mac or lunix, it doesn't lend its self very well to housekeeping, it seems like just about every single piece of software out there wants to have at least one seat on your desktop, and this can lead to A LOT of desktop clutter, that not only looks bad, but it also has to be loaded in to the RAM right at startup, and... you then have to stay there until it shuts down. So it's easy to see why it matters to clean up your desktop, not only can it make it hard to get to what you need when you need it, but it can literally slowdown your computer as well.

So, it's easy to see why it's important to mange your desktop correctly, and there are many programs that can help you do this. They are fairly good at what they do, and I mean anything is better than nothing. But it's kinda like hireing a stranger to clean your house, they can do the best job in the world at it, but nothing can beat doing it your self, then know where everything is.

So, lets get on to the Clear Sky Rule!
It’s pretty simple. It’s all about trying to keep a clear view of the sky, meaning keeping your desktop clean and clear. Keep that in mind, and it will be easy. Here are the steps:
  1. Pick a wall paper that you love, the more you like it the better. It should really be something that you just can't look at enough. If it ever gets boring change it!
  2. Next time you use your computer, do your best to make a mental note of the programs that you use and the ones that you don't.
  3. Do that for a week of so, just jot down the ones that you don't get to everyday, and make a note of it. Next, you need to look in your start menu, and see which ones have shortcuts, and which don't. Be sure to take note of that!
  4. Next, we will make start menu shortcuts for the ones that don't have shortcuts yet (do this for everything on your desktop so that you don't accidentally delete your only shortcut to it), this is as easy as it was to take them out. Just drag and drop them from the desktop to the place in the menu you would like them to be.
  5. And here comes the hard part. You need to clear up your “sky," or whatever walpaper you chose. Try to make it so that you have as few shortcuts, and other unnessicary things as possible. If you did step for correctly, you should be able to just delete them. If you don't want to to that, you might want to consider making folders for all your old icons and organizing them either alphabetically, or by frequency of use.
  6. And last, you should put all of the icons you have left on your desktop, move them to your task bar, and then delete their icons left on your desktop.
And that's it! you should have a "clear sky" now. That will make it easier to keep track of what's on your system, and make it a little easier to stay virus free!
