When discussing the emergence of Healthcare Information
Exchanges (or HIEs) it is important to keep in mind the sheer leaps in
efficiency that HealthCare providers will and do experience in their practices.
Not only does the new intuitive of networked heath records lead to faster and
easier access to those records, it means that organizations that hare still in
the ‘middle ages’ have to switch to digital record keeping making it
dramatically easier for them to provide a higher level of quality of care. (National
2013)
However while many have lagged behind in their adoption of
Healthcare information Exchange systems Saint Claire Regional medical center of
Morehead Kentucky Is not one, as Anthony Guerra of HealthSystemCIO.com Details
in his interview with Randy McCleese (CIO of Saint Claire) that “McCleese isn’t
dipping his toe into the Meditech pool, but jumping right in…” As the founding
member of the North Eastern Kentucky Healthcare information Exchange, he is
very serious about moving Kentucky and his hospital forward in Healthcare
Information Technology. (Guerra, 2010)
Later on in that same interview, McCleese discussed the
local RIO, the strides that St. Claire and Morehead State University have made
in developing it, and how that while the Morehead area does not quite have the
population to sustain it, they are working with HealthBridge to improve it, and
continue it’s progression. (Guerra, 2010)
Another important aspect of Healthcare information exchanges
is how they’re being used. In the current applications of healthcare
Information systems there is a clear trend that illustrates that, the largest
application of HIE, is in the payment portions of information exchange, with 79% of hospitals being very likely to
use HIE’s for checking insurance eligibility by 2018, and 98% being very likely to somewhat likely to do so (Smith Et Al,
2013).
